President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the state of emergency imposed on Rivers State, restoring democratic governance after six months of federal control.
LensNews confirmed that the order takes effect from September 18, 2025, allowing Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Nma Odu, and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume their official duties.
Tinubu declared emergency rule in March following a prolonged political standoff between the governor and the state legislature, compounded by rising insecurity and pipeline vandalism in the oil-rich state. Federal intervention placed the state under temporary emergency administration.
In a statement issued from the Presidency, Tinubu said the conditions that necessitated the emergency had eased. He commended local leaders and stakeholders for helping restore calm and pledged continued federal support to maintain stability in the region.
The lifting of the order brings an end to months of uncertainty in Rivers, where political tensions and disruptions to governance had raised concerns among residents and investors.
