President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially requested the Senate to confirm Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the substantive Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The request was contained in a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during Tuesday’s plenary session, notifying lawmakers of the nomination made in accordance with Section 154(1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
Lens News learnt that the nomination follows the expiration of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure, which ended in October 2025, after serving as INEC Chairman since 2015.
Professor Amupitan, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria from Kogi State, currently serves as the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. He is also a Professor of Law with expertise in Company Law, Evidence, and Corporate Governance.
Tinubu had earlier presented Amupitan’s name to the National Council of State, which unanimously endorsed the nomination before forwarding it to the Senate for screening and confirmation.
The nomination marks the first time an individual from the North-Central region, specifically Kogi State, is being considered for the position of INEC Chairman.
