Scholz reaffirms support for ukraine, defends Germany’s free speech policies

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has reaffirmed his commitment to Ukraine’s sovereignty on Friday, pushing back against criticism from former U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration.

As Trump engages with Russia, clashes with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and threatens to sideline Europe, Scholz emphasized the need for Germany and Europe to remain firm in their stance.

Speaking at his final major campaign event before Sunday’s elections, Scholz declared, “We won’t abandon Ukraine or decide its future without them. We will ensure Ukraine remains free to choose its own government.”

Recall that Germany has been Ukraine’s second-largest military aid provider after the U.S. since Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.

Scholz also rejected criticism from Trump allies, including billionaire Elon Musk and Vice President JD Vance, who labeled Germany’s online hate speech regulations as “Orwellian.”

“We in Europe will uphold our laws, including the ban on Nazi symbols in Germany,” Scholz asserted.
