Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has stated that the growing number of governors, senators and other political figures defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) is a reflection of the successful reform agenda under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The governor made the remarks while receiving former Senator Aliyu Ahmed Wadada into the party in Lafia on October 20 2025.

Governor Sule said key elements of the reform programme including the unification of the foreign-exchange rates, removal of fuel subsidy and overhaul of the power sector have inspired confidence among politicians who now perceive a winning trajectory under the APC. “We saw the first reforms in the area of the unification of the multiple foreign-exchange rates. We saw another one in the removal of fuel subsidy. We have seen one now in the power sector … what interests me most is that of skills acquisition and agriculture,” he told state-house correspondents following a meeting with the President.

Lens News learnt that Governor Sule also dismissed concerns that Nigeria was sliding into a one-party state, saying instead that “we just want to be the dominant party … the other parties can win 10 per cent of the votes.” He noted that the appeal of the APC has increased because of perceived alignment with national development goals rather than mere party politics.

Political analysts interpret the wave of defections as a signal of growing momentum for the APC ahead of the 2027 general election. With governors and senators joining the party, the APC is consolidating its advantage at sub-national and federal levels. However, they caution that maintaining internal cohesion and delivering on reform promises will determine whether the surge translates into electoral success.

Governor Sule’s remarks underscore one of the strategies driving the APC’s recruitment of opposition figures: the demonstration of policy implementation that can be leveraged politically. As President Tinubu’s reform trajectory continues to shape perceptions, the APC appears poised to benefit from both governance performance and party growth.
