The Oke-Ogun Changemakers (TOCs), an organization dedicated to fostering development in Oke-Ogun area of Oyo State, has publicly denounced the unlawful mining activities in Itasa Town, Iwajowa Local Government of the region. They express deep concern over Architype Industries Nigeria Limited, which they accuse of exploiting the region’s mineral resources for more than two decades without adhering to legal requirements or providing adequate compensation to the local community.
Mr. Wasiu Mustapha, President of the Oke-Ogun Changemakers, stated, “We cannot stand by while our community’s resources are being plundered without any regard for the law or the well-being of our people. The lack of a Community Development Agreement and an Environmental Impact Assessment is not only illegal but also a threat to the health and livelihood of the residents of Itasa.”
According to reports, the inhabitants of Itasa have engaged in peaceful demonstrations, bolstered by the backing of local authorities and their esteemed traditional leader, HRM Oba Michael Sijuola Oyediran. The TOCs emphasize that despite the prolonged duration of these activities, the community has yet to receive equitable compensation or tangible benefits from the mining operations.
Mr. Adebowale Taofeek Oyebisi, Public Relations Officer of the Oke-Ogun Changemakers, added, “The residents of Itasa have endured this injustice for far too long. It is unconscionable that an enterprise can conduct operations over such an extended period while evading its statutory responsibilities to the local populace. We insist on transparency, accountability, and equitable treatment for the community of Itasa.”
The organization is calling for unequivocal responses from Architype Industries Nigeria Limited and decisive intervention from relevant governmental agencies, such as the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development. They advocate for the community to receive just compensation, assistance in remedying any environmental degradation, and the opportunity for meaningful dialogue regarding their grievances.
In conclusion, the Oke-Ogun Changemakers implored the government, mining entities, and all pertinent stakeholders to prioritize the rights of local communities and environmental preservation. “Through collective action, we can secure justice for Itasa and safeguard the future prosperity of Oke-Ogun,” they asserted in their official statement.
