The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on the Federal and state governments to immediately stop the demolition of citizens’ properties across the country.

In a statement released via his verified X handle on Monday, Obi condemned the ongoing demolitions, saying they reflect “a lack of compassion” and deepen economic hardship for already struggling Nigerians.

Lens News learnt that Obi described the demolitions as counterproductive, especially at a time when unemployment, hunger, and inflation are biting hard. According to him, “Governance should be about alleviating the suffering of the people, not worsening it.”

The former Anambra State governor said the indiscriminate destruction of homes, shops, and business premises without fair compensation or relocation alternatives further destabilizes local economies.

He urged leaders to explore humane alternatives, such as urban planning reforms and compensation schemes, to protect the welfare of citizens.

“Policies must be people-centered. Development should not come at the cost of human dignity and survival,” Obi stated.

He also encouraged the public to demand accountability from leaders, stressing that citizens’ rights and properties must be respected under a just and democratic system.
