Obasa Returns As Lagos Assembly Speaker

Mudashiru Obasa has been returned as the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.

Obasa was reinstated following the resignation of Mojisola Meranda, who stepped down from the role during a special plenary session on Monday.

Meranda assumed office on January 13, 2025, after the removal of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. Despite her short tenure, lawmakers praised her leadership and ability to maintain a positive atmosphere in the Assembly.

She resigned alongside all principal officers who were appointed with her.

The crisis began on January 13, when Obasa was removed by two-thirds of the 40-member House over alleged misconduct. Meranda, then his deputy, became the first female Speaker of the state.

However, Obasa rejected his removal, claiming due process was not followed and accusing authorities of militarizing the Assembly complex.

On February 27, he arrived at the Assembly Complex with armed security operatives, insisting he was still the Speaker. Despite his stance, lawmakers reaffirmed their support for Meranda.

In a bid to resolve the leadership crisis, notable All Progressives Congress leaders, including former governors of Osun, Ogun, and Lagos states, Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, respectively, reportedly intervened on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.

After a reconciliation meeting with all lawmakers on Monday, Meranda tendered her resignation alongside other top principal executives.

“This is a notice of resignation as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Meranda announced during the plenary.

Subsequently, Obasa was returned as the Speaker of the House.

Speaking during the plenary session, he thanked the lawmaker while calling for unity and love.
