Historian Anthony Prest applauds Tinubu for restoring history in schools

A Nigerian historian and Africanist, Chief Anthony Prest, has commended President Bola Tinubu’s administration for reinstating history studies in primary and secondary schools across the country.

In a statement released during an open art exhibition in Abuja on Saturday, Prest lauded the decision, describing it as a significant step forward for national development.

Prest, the son of Chief Arthur Prest—one of the founding members of the Action Group and deputy leader to the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo—emphasized the importance of historical education, noting that no society can progress without knowledge of its past.

His remarks follow the announcement by Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, three months ago that President Tinubu had mandated the reintroduction of Nigerian History as a subject in schools, reversing its removal from the curriculum in 2009.

“I am happy that Asiwaju has brought history back to our schools. That’s dynamism,” Prest stated. “History is crucial. Our children need to know their past. You can see the ongoing debate in America about teaching the history of slavery. I believe history is essential.”

He also revealed plans to introduce history education initiatives in Abuja’s schools, including mobile exhibition tents and transportation services that will showcase narratives on slavery, abolition, key historical figures, and Africa’s liberation.

“Nigerians need to understand that we come from one of the richest countries in the world,” he added. “I am optimistic that Nigerians will appreciate this effort. We just need to be patient with Mr. President—he is working tirelessly, 24 hours a day.”

Prest further expressed his support for Tinubu, highlighting his long-standing advocacy for democratic values even before becoming a senator and national leader.
