China has sentenced its former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Tang Renjian, to death with a two-year reprieve after finding him guilty of massive corruption.

Lens News gathered that a court in Changchun, Jilin Province, ruled that Tang accepted bribes worth more than 268 million yuan (about $37.6 million) between 2007 and 2024 while serving in various government positions.

Tang, who was Agriculture Minister from December 2020 until September 2024, was expelled from the Communist Party in November 2024 following a corruption probe. The court also stripped him of all political rights and ordered the confiscation of his property.

Under Chinese law, a death sentence with reprieve means the execution is suspended for two years. If the convict shows good behaviour, the sentence is usually commuted to life imprisonment.

The case is one of the most high-profile convictions in President Xi Jinping’s ongoing anti-corruption campaign, which has brought down several senior officials in recent years.
