The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) invited Mele Kyari, the former Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), to its headquarters in Abuja today for questioning. Multiple sources confirm he arrived around 2:15–2:30 pm to address queries tied to the management of refinery maintenance funds—suspected to involve up to $7.2 billion in discrepancies.
A high-level source said he was “with our investigators at the moment. This is all I can disclose.” No official statement has been issued by EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale as of filing.
The questioning relates to alleged misuse and misappropriation of funds earmarked for the turnaround maintenance of Nigeria’s refineries. This follows a recent Federal High Court order to freeze four bank accounts linked to Kyari, as part of the ongoing investigation.
Kyari held the GMD position from 2019 until July 2024, a period during which the refineries were under performance pressure. The probe underscores scrutiny of governance in Nigeria’s oil sector.
