The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has moved swiftly to quell rising concerns over reports of an alleged coup plot within the Nigerian military. In a statement issued on Saturday, the DHQ described the claims as “false and misleading,” urging the public to disregard the misinformation being circulated by purveyors of falsehoods and enemies of the nation.
The statement, signed by the Director of Defence Information, Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, addressed recent reports suggesting that the cancellation of activities marking Nigeria’s 65th Independence Anniversary was linked to an alleged attempted military coup. The DHQ clarified that the cancellation was a precautionary measure to ensure national security and public safety, not a response to any coup attempt.
The DHQ also addressed reports of the arrest of sixteen military officers, stating that these arrests were part of routine internal investigations into professional misconduct and were not related to any coup plot. The military emphasized its commitment to upholding the Constitution and maintaining loyalty to the civilian government.
Reaffirming its dedication to democratic governance, the DHQ called on Nigerians to remain calm and vigilant against attempts to destabilize the nation. The military assured the public that it remains steadfast in its duty to protect the sovereignty and integrity of the country.
The Defence Headquarters concluded by urging all citizens to continue supporting the armed forces in their efforts to ensure peace and security across Nigeria.
