The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has inspected the production of new Nigerian Air Force (NAF) fighter jets and helicopters currently being assembled in Italy as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s air defence capabilities.

According to Lens News findings, the minister was accompanied by top military officials, including the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, during the visit to Leonardo Aerospace Manufacturing Facility in Turin, Italy. The visit, which took place on Tuesday, was aimed at assessing the progress of aircraft construction and ensuring quality control before final delivery.

Badaru commended the Italian manufacturers for adhering to international production standards, noting that the acquisition would enhance Nigeria’s aerial surveillance, counterinsurgency, and territorial defence operations. He emphasised that the visit aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to revamping the nation’s defence infrastructure and ensuring the military is well-equipped to confront security challenges.

“Our goal is to ensure every aircraft purchased meets global operational standards and contributes effectively to safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity,” the minister said.

The Chief of Air Staff also confirmed that the first batch of the new aircraft will arrive in Nigeria in early 2026. He stated that the equipment will be deployed to key Air Force bases across the country to intensify operations against terrorism, banditry, and oil theft.

Lens News gathered that the Nigerian government had earlier entered into a multi-billion-dollar partnership with Leonardo and other defence contractors for the supply of advanced air platforms, including multirole fighter jets and light-attack helicopters.

Defence experts believe the new additions will significantly enhance the NAF’s capability to provide real-time intelligence and rapid-response operations in crisis zones.

The inspection marks another milestone in Nigeria’s ongoing defence modernization drive, with the Ministry of Defence pledging to maintain transparency and accountability throughout the procurement process.
