The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has been compelled to triple his personal security following a series of death threats. These threats are believed to be linked to his recent efforts to enforce compliance within Nigeria’s mining sector, including the revocation of 3,794 mining licenses.
Speaking during a press briefing ahead of the 10th Nigeria Mining Week in Abuja, Alake disclosed that the threats had escalated to the point where he received direct messages, including one that explicitly threatened his life.
Lens News gathered that, the Minister emphasized that these actions are part of a broader initiative to combat illegal mining activities and to ensure that mining operations adhere to regulatory standards. He noted that the crackdown has faced resistance from influential operators who have previously operated with impunity.
Alake’s decision to enhance his security reflects the challenges faced by officials implementing reforms in sectors with entrenched interests. Despite the threats, he remains resolute in his commitment to reforming the mining industry for the benefit of the nation.
