Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called for a comprehensive review of the nation’s constitution to deepen its democracy.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with leaders of political parties organized by the House Committee on Constitution Review, Kalu emphasized the necessity of a constitution that not only permits democracy but actively strengthens and enables it.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s return to democratic governance under the 1999 Constitution, Kalu questioned its current relevance, stating, “We must ask ourselves: Is our Constitution still fit for purpose? Does it reflect the Nigeria we are today, or is it still anchored to the Nigeria of a bygone era?”

The Deputy Speaker highlighted several areas requiring attention, including the restoration of direct constitutional funding for political parties to ensure a level playing field during elections and the establishment of an Independent Appointment Committee (IAC) to oversee appointments.

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) also participated in the meeting, advocating for reforms such as the creation of an Electoral Offences Commission to prosecute electoral offenders and the restoration of public funding for political parties.

Lens News gathered that the ongoing constitution review process aims to produce a people-centered constitution that promotes equity and strengthens national unity.
