The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has launched a nationwide crackdown on foreigners with expired visas and residence permits following the end of the Federal Government’s three-month amnesty programme.
Lens News reports that the amnesty, which expired on September 30, 2025, gave foreign nationals an opportunity to regularise their immigration status without facing penalties.
In a statement, NIS spokesperson Akinsola Akinlabi said enforcement began on October 1, targeting foreigners who overstayed their Visa on Arrival, short-visit and business visas, as well as those with lapsed CERPAC (Comprehensive Expatriate Residence Permit and Alien Card).
The NIS said penalties will depend on the length of overstay:
Less than 3 months — daily fine of $15, removal, or up to a 2-year entry ban
3 months to 1 year — deportation plus up to a 5-year entry ban
Over 1 year — higher fines, removal, and up to a 10-year or permanent entry ban
According to the Service, the exercise is aimed at enforcing compliance, protecting national security, and strengthening Nigeria’s immigration system.
