The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has rescued a 16-year-old domestic worker in Abuja after her employer allegedly poured hot water on her, leaving her with severe burns.
Lens News gathered that the incident happened in Gwarinpa, where the girl had been serving as a maid. She is said to be the eldest of 12 siblings from Imo State and was tasked with caring for three children, including twins, while her employer worked night shifts.
According to eyewitnesses, the employer bathed the teenager with boiling water during a dispute, inflicting injuries so serious that neighbours had to rush her to the hospital. Alarmed by the cruelty, they immediately alerted NAPTIP.
Confirming the case, NAPTIP described the act as “heinous and unacceptable” and vowed to ensure that all those responsible are brought to justice. The agency has already launched an investigation and promised that the victim will also receive proper rehabilitation and support.
The shocking case has reignited outrage over the abuse of young domestic workers in Nigeria, with activists calling for stricter laws to protect children who are often forced into labour. Many argue that without tough punishments, employers will continue to exploit and brutalise minors.
