Ameliorators International Initiative has called for stronger partnerships with development actors, donor agencies, and civil society organizations to scale youth democracy engagement into a nationwide program ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 elections.

The call came during the organization’s commemoration of the 2025 International Day of Democracy through a youth-focused dialogue held in Ilorin, Kwara State, on September 20th, 2025.
Speaking at the event themed “AI-Powered Democracy: The Citizens’ Voice in the Digital Age,” Executive Director Ahmed Ishowo Yakub emphasized the critical role of young citizens in Nigeria’s democratic future.
“The sustainability of Nigeria’s democracy depends on young citizens being empowered to use their voices responsibly. By merging civic education with technology, we are preparing a new generation to shape governance with accountability and innovation,” Yakub stated.

The dialogue brought together 25 young participants, including nine females, with over 60 percent identified as first-time eligible voters for the 2027 general elections.
Student leaders from higher institutions across Kwara State also attended, representing campus civic engagement constituencies.
Comrade Tajudeen Habeeb, a seasoned governance and civic-tech advocate, delivered the keynote presentation.
The former CivicHive fellow, who has extensive experience in public policy research and youth mobilization, emphasized the urgent need for young Nigerians to embrace civic responsibilities alongside digital technology opportunities.
The program also featured panel discussions on AI and democracy intersections, practical sessions on voter registration and digital citizenship, and a “Commitment Circle” where participants pledged to sensitize peers in their communities.

According to Yusuf Mutiu Olaitan, Media and Communication Officer for Ameliorators International Initiative, the commitment circle extends the event’s immediate impact to more than 125 additional youth through peer sensitization.
“The initiative aligns with several Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities),” said Mutiu.
He further noted that the dialogue represents part of broader efforts to prepare young voters for meaningful participation in governance while leveraging technology for transparency and accountability in democratic institutions.
