Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday presided over a meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
LensNews confirmed that the session was attended by several state governors, ministers, and senior government officials. Among those present were governors of Lagos, Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Jigawa, Zamfara, Benue, and Ondo States. Also in attendance was Rivers State’s sole administrator, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (retd.).
The NEC, established by the Constitution, is an advisory body that guides the President on economic policy and coordinates fiscal planning between the federal and state governments. Thursday’s meeting focused on pressing national economic issues, revenue allocation, and strategies for stabilising the economy.
Sources at the meeting disclosed that discussions around the creation of state police also featured prominently, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent call for decentralised policing as part of efforts to tackle insecurity.
The outcome of the meeting is expected to shape upcoming fiscal policies and intergovernmental cooperation as Nigeria continues to grapple with inflation, unemployment, and security challenges.
