The Rivers State House of Assembly has resumed plenary after a six-month suspension, following the lifting of emergency rule in the state by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
LensNews confirmed that lawmakers reconvened on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at the conference hall of the Legislative Quarters in Port Harcourt. The session was presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, marking the official return of legislative activity in the oil-rich state.
The Assembly was suspended on March 18, 2025, when Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers amid a political standoff between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and members of the legislature. The suspension of the Assembly, alongside the temporary removal of the governor and his deputy, effectively placed the state under federal control.
With the end of the emergency order, Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all lawmakers have now been reinstated. President Tinubu said peace and stability have been restored, making it possible for democratic governance to continue.
The return of the Assembly is expected to accelerate pending legislative business and restore checks and balances in Rivers politics after months of paralysis.
