The political climate in Kwara State saw a decisive move this week as the Elders Caucus of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) officially backed the zoning of the 2027 governorship ticket to Kwara North Senatorial District. The declaration came during a press conference held in Ilorin, with Barrister Kunle Sulyman leading members of the caucus from across the three senatorial districts.
Sulyman reminded the public of past arrangements, noting that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, from Kwara Central, has served two four‑year terms, meaning that the Central district would have held power for twenty continuous years, while Kwara South has also produced a governor for eight years. He argued that the next rotation should favour Kwara North to balance the political equation.
While making their case, the Elders Caucus praised the current administration’s development projects across the state, especially the urban renewal programme under the New Ilorin City Master Plan, even while recommending that grievances over its impact should be taken through legal and administrative avenues—not street protest or partisan manipulation.
They also urged eligible voters to participate fully in the ongoing voters registration exercise, emphasizing that “your vote is your weapon and your voter’s card is your instrument towards electing good leaders.”
The Elders Caucus’ call adds momentum to debates about power rotation and equity in Kwara politics. With 2027 still ahead, this endorsement could shape how APC handles zoning amongst aspirants. Will other stakeholder groups within the party adopt the same position, or will there be pushback from those outside Kwara North? The next few months are likely to reveal whether the caucus’s call translates into consensus — or a brewing intra‑party contest.
