Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has unblocked human rights lawyer Festus Ogun on X (formerly Twitter), after almost three years of silence.
Ogun had been blocked since 2021 following his fierce criticisms of the Lagos State government, especially over the #EndSARS protests. Frustrated, he dragged Sanwo-Olu before the Federal High Court, arguing that the governor’s action violated his constitutional right to freedom of expression and access to public information.
Lens News learnt that the pressure eventually forced the governor’s hand. Ogun confirmed in a post that Sanwo-Olu not only unblocked him but also invited him to Lagos House, Marina, for a face-to-face meeting.
Digital rights activists have hailed the move as a symbolic victory. “Public officials cannot shut citizens out of democratic spaces, even on social media,” one campaigner told Lens News. “This case could set the tone for how leaders engage critics online.”
Sanwo-Olu has yet to release a formal statement explaining his decision, but his action is already sparking conversations about free speech, government transparency, and the limits of political power in the digital age.
