President Donald Trump has announced that Charlie Kirk will be honored posthumously with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian award.
Lens News reports that Trump made the declaration while delivering a solemn address at the Pentagon during the September 11 memorial service. In his speech, Trump hailed Kirk as “a giant of his generation, a champion of liberty and an inspiration to millions and millions of people.”
The president also extended heartfelt condolences to Kirk’s wife, Erika, and their children, promising that the official award ceremony will be announced soon. “It’s going to be a very big crowd,” Trump added.
Charlie Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, was just 31 when he was gunned down at Utah Valley University earlier this week. Authorities have described the incident as a politically motivated assassination.
Law enforcement sources confirmed that the suspected shooter is in custody, with a weapon believed to have been used in the attack already recovered. Investigations are ongoing.
Trump’s announcement has stirred emotional reactions across the country. While supporters praised the decision as a powerful recognition of Kirk’s influence on conservative youth, others warned that the tragedy underscores the toxic climate of American politics.
