The Lagos State Police Command has ordered a forensic investigation into the sudden death of former Ondo governorship candidate, Bamidele Akingboye, following the circulation of disturbing images suggesting possible foul play.
LensNews gathered that a viral photograph of Akingboye’s remains appeared on social media over the weekend, showing bruises on his head. This immediately cast doubt on earlier claims that the politician had died peacefully at his VGC residence in Lagos last Wednesday.
Responding to the growing suspicion, Police Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to discreetly probe the matter. In a statement posted on the command’s official X handle, @LagosPoliceNG, the police confirmed that detectives and forensic experts had already visited the scene.
“The commissioner has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, to discreetly investigate the death,” the command said, adding that the premises had been cordoned off while evidence collection was underway using the Command’s Crime Scene Investigation vehicle.
Human rights groups have also weighed in, urging the police to ensure a thorough and transparent inquiry that will reveal the true circumstances of Akingboye’s death.
Akingboye, who flew the flag of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in the November 2024 Ondo governorship election, lost to the incumbent, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
For now, uncertainty lingers as Lagos police intensify efforts to determine whether the politician’s death was natural — or the result of something more sinister.
