The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has fired a bold warning shot ahead of the 2027 general elections, vowing to dismantle the grip of godfatherism and money politics in Nigeria’s political space.
LensNews reports that the party made the declaration during a heated exchange within its leadership, where concerns were raised about the creeping influence of political moneybags.
Alhaji Salihu Mohammed Lukman, a senior voice in the party, cautioned that if unchecked, the ADC could slide into the same traps that have crippled other major parties. He accused some interim leaders of positioning loyalists without proper consultation, stressing that such practices would only breed imposition and weaken internal democracy.
In response, ADC Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, assured members that the party was already working on reforms to block such tendencies. He promised to strengthen internal structures, stop candidate imposition, and rebuild the party bureaucracy to operate on merit, transparency, and accountability.
Part of the new agenda, according to party officials, includes revamping grassroots networks, balancing inclusion across gender and youth, and revisiting the ADC constitution to guarantee fairness in leadership selection. The party believes this fresh approach will not only restore credibility but also set ADC apart in the fierce battle for votes come 2027.
With the ruling and opposition blocs tightening their grip on the political scene, ADC’s gamble on rejecting godfathers and moneybags could either make it a true alternative or expose it to the same old power struggles it now condemns.
